Rolex Triple Calendar Padellone
Real return in the 50’s with this Rolex called “Padellone” (frying pan in Italian, nickname that was given because of the size and the shape of its case), first and only Rolex to display a moon phase until 2017, when Rolex produced another watch with a moon phase called the Cellini. This triple date watch design was very common in the 50’s and 60’s, we can find almost identical models at Patek Philippe, Jaeger, Omega, … It was quite simply a revolution at the time to be able to display so much information on a timepiece. In term of valueit gets tricky as the the prices vary from one Padellone to another, several factors come into play: the state of the dial (if it was redone or not), the state of the case and last very important point, the engravings on the back. On these models, Rolex engraved the serial numbers and the Rolex crown on the back of the case, so if over the years the watches got polished too often they could no longer be visible and therefore strongly affect the value. The piece we offer is in a superb condition despite the years, the dial although marked has the merit of being entirely original, it displays without shame the ravages of time, as for the case, it is just in an exceptional condition, it also displays some stigmata but has been very little polished, the inscriptions on the back are perfectly visible (the last 3 numbers have been deliberately blurred). Today, in our opinion, it is better to own a piece like this one with marks of time and that has never been touched than a perfect piece found at the bottom of a safe, never worn and one day realize that in turns out that the watch had undergone a restoration and that it is not as beautiful and perfect as on the paper… In fact it’s a bit like some people on Instagram VS Reality… We realise our mistake when it’s already too late…
