Omega Speedmaster Pre-Moon Tropical 2915-3
Launched in 1957, the 2915 is an extremely important watch in the history of Omega, it is one of the most sought after Speedmaster references as it is the beginning of the Speedmaster’s history. It is acknowledged that only 3,000 – 4,000 pieces were produced between 1957 and 1963. It was the first chronograph to feature a tachymeter scale on the bezel and not on the dial as was often the case at the time, making the dial much more readable as it was less crowded so that one could concentrate on the essential, namely the time and the chronos. The 2915 was declined in 3 versions : the 2915-1, the first version produced in 1957 (the most sought-after), it is the first Speedmaster ever with a steel bezel and broad arrow hands. Recently a piece established a new sales record, it sold for €3,000,000 at Phillips’ last November auction. Then comes the second version, the 2915-2, the changes are minimal between the 1 and the 2 and finally comes the last version, the 2915-3 which is considered to be the transition model between the 2915 and the 2998, it is the most “irregular” model in the sense that we were in a transition period and from then on we find the 2915-3 with a steel bezel and broad arrow hands like the previous generations of 2915, but also versions with a steel bezel and Alpha hands (hands that we find on the 2998) or simply a version like ours which takes back the Broad Arrow hands of the previous generations of 2915, the bakelite bezel that we will find on the 2998, and the engraved case back with the seahorse that we find only later on the 2998. However it was very common at the time to find on known references a mixture of parts coming from the old and new generations. This one takes the best of both worlds and on top of that its dial as well as its hands have been tropicalized with time. The rendering is close to perfection because it is uniform, the bezel has also changed colour with time, it has turned on a purple tone, the case is beautiful, the back of the case is not too polished, we can still see without any problem the engraving on the back. The watch comes directly from the grandson of the first owner, a real collector’s item.
